What’s On My Radar

Film(s): The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Man of Steel

Man of Steel is of course released this week and I’m looking forward to seeing it (though probably not until sometime next week).  The Hobbit, on the other hand, doesn’t get released until December of this year, but the teaser trailer was just released on 11 June 2013.  As a result, I decided I wanted to watch it. And that brought me back to my previous decision to not watch the trailers for Man of Steel (which is released this Friday).  My theory has been modified since I posted my last musing on movie trailers. I have no problem watching trailers for adaptations (assuming I’m familiar with the original work of course).  My theory is that I’m already familiar enough with the main points of a story so as not to get spoiled. Additionally, watching the trailers gives me an idea of what I will expect and therefore reduces the disappointment that can result when an adaptation strays from a beloved original story.

Here’s the trailer for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug (decide for yourself whether to watch or not)

And here’s a little something else too (important elves watching people watching the trailer):

Music: Capital Cities

album cover of In a Tidal Wave of Mystery by Capital CitiesI attended another show by these guys on May 31st and their full length album was just released last week.  I can’t help but turn the volume up and dance whenever I hear their music. I’ve had the EP for quite some time, but finally had a chance to get the full length album this week and I can’t stop listening to it. Its fun music and if you ever have a chance to see them live – just do it! It’s so much fun! Oh and buy their album if you haven’t yet!

Television: So You Think You Can Dance

I’m not a big fan of reality television and contest shows, except for this one. I love So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD). I’ve watching it since the beginning and every season there are always must see moments that make me cry or keep me in complete awe. This week was Vegas Week! And that is always something to watch. The sheer amount of work contestants have to put in…especially for that dreaded all night group dance is incredible. I know I would break mentally with that.  I do have to say though, there wasn’t as much drama in this year’s Vegas Week as in year’s past. But that doesn’t mean the dancing is any less. Sonya Tayeh’s choreography was amazing and I’d be shocked if Fic Shun doesn’t end up in the top 20.

Book: Among Others by Jo Walton

book cover for Among Others I’m reading this book as it is the current pick for the Sword and Laser book club.  It’s kind of slow and not exactly my favorite, but there are enough gems sprinkled throughout that I am continuing to read it.  The quickest way to explain this book is that it is the diary of a young girl who reads a massive amount of science fiction. Oh, and there’s fairies. Check out my review or the Sword and Laser discussion on

Comic: Superman Unchained by Scott Snyder and Jim Lee

Like many people I’ve been looking forward to this collaboration for some time now. I typically purchase my comics digitally (saves space), but this is a book I bought the physical copy.  Look at that insert!

This is a book that has been teased and teased. And I am not dissapointed. I can’t wait to read more as the story unfolds. For a more ‘professional’ review than my ‘I loved it’ check out what Tim Callahan has to say over on TOR.Com.

And that’s what’s on my radar this week. What’s on yours?
