Are you reading Gotham Academy? If not you should be! This is a book great for both a young and old audience (and everyone in between too).  Book four comes out Wednesday (still time to catch up) and you don’t want to miss it.  Thanks to writer Becky Cloonan, I had a chance to preview issue 4.  It’s another great entry into this new world.

If you’ll recall, Gotham Academy #3 left off with caught the cliff hanger.  Olive was reaching down into a large hole inside the abandoned and boarded up North Hall to retrieve the phone Pomeline had dropped when her arm was grabbed!

Gotham Academy #4 begins with Pomeline and Olive talking about that experience in gym class. It’s painfully clear that they immediately ran screaming from the North Hall, and left the door open, which tipped off school officials that someone had been snooping.

I’m not going to tell you much more about this issue because I don’t want to spoil anything. But I will say that the pacing of the story is brilliant providing some great red herrings while also giving us some distinct payoffs and of course providing more cliffhangers to keep us coming back.  The art continues to highlight the story and tone perfectly. And the colors! The lighting in each panel is stunning.  And of course the story and characters…

Olive is exactly the kind of protagonist I’ve been wanting in comics. She’s strong but vulnerable. She’s dealing with massive past traumas while still trying to navigate the complicated affairs of adolescence.  And she handles the discovery of a new character with much more aplomb than I ever would.

But Olive isn’t the only great character in Gotham Academy. Book 4 gives us more of Maps too. That little girl is the pluckiest little nerd. You can’t help but fall in love with her excitement and need to discover.  We’re also gradually learning more about Olives other classmates – Pomeline and Heathcliff (who I love), Kyle, that mysterious adorable blonde boy.

And of course, it wouldn’t be Gotham without a Wayne. The man himself makes another brief appearance in this book, talking about Olive no less. What’s the connection? What happened last summer? What was in the North Hall? I can’t wait to keep reading! And you need to make sure you run to your local comic shop to pick up Gotham Academy #4 (and 1-3) as soon as you can!

Meghan is an environmental scientist by trade but an artist at heart. She loves all things geeky/nerdy and is frequently found with less geeky friends rolling their eyes at her. She often spouts all kinds of pop culture trivia and nonsense stemming from her avid love of movies, music, art, and books. If not curled up with a book (she reads at least one a week) or comic, she can be found painting with something on a screen to distract her. She wishes she was as cool as Veronica Mars or as Kate Daniels. Besides blogging about comics here you can also find her exploring around twitter, instagram, tumblr, pinterest, goodreads, and trying to keep up appearances on her own blog.
